For decades, this dual identity — as both an economic engine and an ecological treasure — has placed the region at the center of a persistent environmental crisis, one shaped by industrial activity, weak enforcement, and limited data.
Opening the session, Dr. Prince Eze outlined the three most pressing environmental challenges confronting the region: oil spillage, gas flaring, and water pollution. He noted that oil spillage typically results from pipeline failures and infrastructure breaches, while gas flaring refers to the continuous burning of natural gas released during oil production — a practice that has persisted in parts of the Niger Delta for decades, releasing significant emissions into the atmosphere. Both, he explained, are compounded by ongoing water pollution affecting the region's rivers and creeks.
Dr. Eze referenced the United Nations Environment Programme's landmark assessment of Ogoniland, in Rivers State near Port Harcourt, which documented severe and long-term contamination of soil and groundwater in the area. He noted that, notwithstanding the findings and recommendations of that report, conditions on the ground have improved only marginally in the years since.
Climate Change as a Compounding Factor
Dr. Eze positioned climate change as both a consequence and a contributing driver of the region's environmental degradation. Rising sea levels and increasingly erratic rainfall patterns, he explained, are intensifying flooding across Niger Delta communities, compounding the effects of pollution that already strain local ecosystems and livelihoods.
He categorized the resulting impact across three dimensions:
Social impact: Displacement caused by flooding is forcing residents from their homes, contributing to rising poverty and unemployment.
Health impact: Prolonged exposure to polluted air has been associated with declining fertility rates among men, increased cancer incidence, and a rise in respiratory illness.

The second half of the session, led by Onyekachi Okoro, shifted focus to the technical tools now available to support environmental monitoring and reporting.
Okoro presented datacab.io, a data visualization and reporting platform designed to support environmental governance through real-time monitoring. The presentation included a practical explanation of particulate matter — specifically PM1 and PM2.5 — and their associated health consequences; particles of this size are small enough to penetrate deep into the respiratory system, and are widely recognized in environmental health research as a contributor to the type of respiratory illness discussed earlier in the session. Okoro also demonstrated how the platform tracks real-time air quality and humidity data, using topographic, holographic, and postural mapping techniques to represent community-level exposure.
This was followed by a live demonstration of the Airnote, a low-cost air quality sensor developed by the Media Awareness and Justice Initiative (MAJI). The session covered the device's specifications, installation process, operational use, and data transmission capabilities. Devices of this kind reflect a broader trend in environmental monitoring toward affordable, distributed sensor networks that extend data collection beyond centralized government infrastructure and into the communities most directly affected.
